What Lenders May Ask
Under the ECOA, lenders have guidelines regarding questions that they may and may not ask.

May Ask	May Not Ask
About residency or immigration status	About sex, race, national origin, or religion
If you are married, unmarried, or separated	If you are divorced or widowed
Information about your spouse if you live in a community property state or if you are using property in such states as collateral Community states: Arizona, California, Idaho, Louisiana, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, Washington, and Wisconsin	Information about your spouse if you do not live in a community property state, unless he or she is applying with you
If you have to pay alimony, child support, or separate maintenance payments	If you receive alimony, child support, or separate maintenance payments, unless you are using this income to establish creditworthiness
