A Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN), also known as a Federal Tax Identification Number, is assigned by the US Internal Revenue Service to sole proprietors, corporations, partnerships, estates, trusts, and other entities for tax filing and reporting purposes. The District of Columbia uses the same number (your FEIN) for tax filing and reporting purposes. You can obtain your FEIN online, by mail or phone.

  1. Submit an application online.

By Mail or Phone
  1. Complete IRS Form SS-4*.

  2. Once the form is completed you can obtain your FEIN by calling (866) 816-2065, or mail the form to:

    Internal Revenue Service
    Attn: Entity Control
    Philadelphia, PA 19255
