1. National Women's Business Center's Up and Running Program Starts July 11

Up and Running is a 13-session program created to educate and inform the new or prospective business owner. Participants will receive essential business know-how through this comprehensive course taught by successful business owners or small business professionals. These instructors, who are, in effect, business mentors, will help participants identify pitfalls common to new businesses, thereby minimizing risks and maximizing chances of success. Workshop members are also guided by NWBC staff members who are able to provide further resources to understanding business ownership issues above and beyond the course.

This program is for new and prospective full-time or part-time business owners-women and men who have started a business within the last six months or are planning to start a business within the upcoming year and are clearly focused on what they want to do.

Location
National Women's Business Center's Office
1001 Connecticut Avenue, NW
Suite 919
Washington, DC 20036
(Corner of Connecticut Avenue and K Street;
entrance to office building is on K Street, across from Farragut Square.)

All interested Up and Running candidates are required to have an intake interview. Attendance at the Introduction to Business Ownership seminar can be substituted for the intake interview. To register for the seminar or schedule an interview, please contact Crystal Luckey at the NWBC office at (202) 785-4922.

2. National Capital Revitalization Corporation and Morgan Stanley Real Estate Form $150 Million Equity Partnership

The National Capital Revitalization Corporation's (NCRC) Board of Directors approved a $150 Million strategic equity partnership between NCRC and Morgan Stanley Real Estateís MSREF US. This initiative will provide significant capital to deliver catalytic development throughout the District of Columbia.

Using its existing land inventory and newly acquired properties, NCRC will provide a diverse line of economic development initiatives for the District. Morgan Stanley Real Estate will provide investment capital and leverage its worldwide expertise both with large scale real estate financing and the broader firm's expertise in public finance, affordable housing finance and economic development. This business relationship will further NCRC's mission by bringing development projects to market in a more efficient and nimble manner, and increasing capital for its neighborhood reinvestments.

With this venture, NCRC has the option to secure its own equity and operate with private industry speed. District residents will begin to see the benefits of this partnership through increased affordable housing, retail options and employment opportunities in their neighborhoods. Hillcrest residents of East Washington will be among the first beneficiaries given that Skyland is slated to be funded first.
